Meaning
Industrial computer systems coordinate the movements and variables of polymer processing machinery. In injection moulding, the machine controller executes the sequencing of clamping, injection, pack and recovery phases based on sensor feedback. This system ensures that every movement occurs at the precise time and pressure specified in the process recipe.
Control Mechanism
High speed processors monitor the hydraulic pressure, screw position and barrel temperatures hundreds of times per second. By adjusting proportional valves, the machine controller maintains the required injection velocity profile as the polymer fills the mould cavity. This closed-loop regulation prevents short shots and flashing by compensating for variations in resin viscosity.
By switching from velocity control to pressure control at the optimum screw position, the system avoids packing the cavity too tightly and prevents internal stress in the molded parts.
Mould Protection
Low pressure clamp close monitoring prevents damage to the expensive steel tool. If a part from the previous cycle fails to eject and remains in the mould, the machine controller detects the resistance and stops the clamp from closing. This action prevents the tool plates from crushing the stuck plastic and destroying the polished cavity surfaces.
Process Logging
Continuous tracking of process variables allows the system to identify drift in the production run. The controller exports this data to quality management systems to provide a traceable record for each molded part. This digital record helps trace defects back to specific process variations such as a heater band failure.
