Meaning
Production workflows incorporate a series of tests to verify that a specific batch of material meets all performance requirements before it is released for sale. This lot qualification process involves checking the chemical composition, physical dimensions and mechanical properties of the resin or finished part. It ensures that every shipment is consistent with the initial prototype and the customer specification.
Batch Homogeneity
Testing samples from the beginning, middle and end of a production run confirms that the material is uniform throughout the lot. If the lot qualification reveals a drift in properties, the entire batch may need to be quarantined for further investigation. Consistency is the primary goal of any large-scale moulding operation.
Moulding Stability
Predictable shrink rates and warp characteristics depend on the resin having a stable molecular weight and moisture level. By performing lot qualification on the raw material, the moulder can anticipate how the plastic will behave in the tool. This reduces the time spent on trial-and-error adjustments during the startup phase.
Failure Cost
Releasing an unqualified lot can lead to mass product recalls or the failure of parts in the field. The expense of these failures is much higher than the investment required for a robust testing program. Thorough documentation of every qualification step provides a trail for troubleshooting if quality issues arise later.
