Resin Quality
High levels of limonene correlate with strong, undesirable odours that make the recycled plastic unsuitable for indoor applications or personal care packaging. Moulders use the measured concentration of this terpene to evaluate the quality of incoming post-consumer resin batches. A low value indicates a thorough washing and deodorization process, enabling the resin to be used in higher-value applications without causing odor complaints.

Decontamination Process
Devolatilization during extrusion compounding is one of the primary methods used to reduce volatile contaminants. The extraction of limonene requires high vacuum levels and optimal residence times in the extruder. When the vacuum system underperforms, the concentration of limonene remains high, leading to batch rejection.

Because the compound is persistent, it serves as a reliable marker to monitor the consistency of recycling runs.
