Meaning
Electronic regulation devices manage the power output to heating elements within a heated manifold system to maintain precise resin temperatures. These hot runner controllers are essential for maintaining a stable process window in complex high volume moulding operations. They prevent the plastic from degrading due to overheating or freezing at the gate due to insufficient heat.
Zone Management
Discrete temperature sensors provide feedback to the unit for each individual drop or manifold branch. Most hot runner controllers use proportional integral derivative logic to adjust the voltage supplied to each heater. This ensures that the material remains at a uniform viscosity as it travels through the runner system toward the cavities.
Thermal Stability
Fluctuations in the ambient temperature of the plant or the cooling rate of the mould can affect the internal melt temperature. Advanced hot runner controllers compensate for these external changes by reacting to slight dips in the sensor readings before the material starts to solidify. Maintaining this balance is important for preventing the formation of stringing or cold slugs at the part entry point.
Gate Timing
Timing of the valve gates is often integrated into the power management system to synchronize with the machine cycle. Sophisticated hot runner controllers manage the opening and closing of pins to ensure that each cavity fills at the same rate and stops at the same pressure. This level of control reduces the occurrence of flash and ensures that part weights remain consistent throughout the production run.
