Meaning
Duration a specific volume of plastic resin remains within a drying or heating vessel before it enters the processing machine. Hopper residence time is calculated by dividing the total volume of the hopper by the rate at which the material is consumed by the extruder or injection moulder. It must be long enough to allow for the complete migration of moisture from the core of the pellets to the surface, especially when handling engineering resins.
Material Specificity
Requirements vary significantly between different polymer families. While some resins might reach the target moisture level in two hours, others need four or more. Hopper residence time must be adjusted if the throughput of the production line increases.
Output Impact
Insufficient time in the vessel leads to inconsistent melt viscosity and mechanical failure in the finished part. Over-drying can also occur if the hopper residence time becomes excessive, particularly for heat-sensitive materials that might undergo thermal degradation or color shifts.
Vessel Sizing
Selecting the correct hopper capacity is a function of the maximum shot weight and the cycle time of the press. Engineers must ensure the vessel provides enough volume to maintain the minimum hopper residence time at peak production speeds.
