Meaning
Ratio of electrical energy output to the surface area of a heater band determines the thermal load of a cartridge element. Correct sizing of the thermal load ensures that the barrel surface transfers heat efficiently without causing local hotspots. High heating power density allows for rapid recovery of the melt temperature after a cold start but increases the risk of polymer scorching.
Barrel Physics
Metal conductivity limits the rate at which energy moves from the element into the resin. If the heating power density exceeds the thermal dissipation capacity of the barrel steel, the heater life shortens due to internal oxidation. Ceramic insulated bands provide a different heat profile compared to mica bands.
Melt Stability
Shear heat contributes significantly to the energy balance inside the screw. While external heaters provide the initial energy, an excessive heating power density can trigger thermal degradation of sensitive additives or flame retardants. Monitoring the watt density per square centimeter prevents the surface temperature from overshooting the setpoint.
Precise management of this ratio prevents the formation of degraded material layers near the inner barrel wall. This thermal control is necessary for materials with narrow processing windows.
Hardware Selection
Nozzles and manifolds require specific energy inputs to maintain fluid flow. Small diameter nozzles often require a higher heating power density to overcome the cooling effect of the mould platen.
