Meaning
Self-aligning injection components allow for slight movement to compensate for thermal expansion or minor misalignment. A floating nozzle tip sits within the hot runner assembly and adjusts its position to find the centre of the gate. This design reduces the mechanical stress on the nozzle and prevents the wear that occurs with rigid systems.
It ensures a reliable seal between the hot runner and the cold mould plate.
Thermal Alignment
Expansion of the hot runner manifold can move the nozzle away from its cold-state position. A floating nozzle tip slides within its housing to maintain contact with the gate despite this movement. This flexibility prevents the nozzle from exerting side loads on the gate detail.
Leak Prevention
Maintaining a tight seal at the interface is critical for preventing plastic from entering the nozzle well. The floating nozzle tip uses the injection pressure of the resin to press itself firmly against the mould seat.
Maintenance Simplicity
Replacing a damaged tip is often easier in a floating design compared to a threaded or fixed assembly. Because the floating nozzle tip is not permanently attached, it can be removed and cleaned without disturbing the rest of the hot runner. This reduces the downtime required for routine gate maintenance.
New tips can be swapped in during a standard production break to maintain part quality. Operators check the seating surface for debris every time the floating tip is serviced.
