Meaning
Fatty food simulants are surrogate test media defined by regulatory frameworks to replicate the extractive properties of high lipid foodstuffs during migration testing of polymeric packaging materials. These chemical test media govern the validation of thermoplastics intended for contact with oils, butter, and fat rich emulsions by quantifying how much mass transfers from the moulded part into the simulants under specified thermal stress. They stop applying when the packaging material encounters dry foodstuffs or aqueous environments without lipophilic constituents, because those applications demand entirely different simulant classifications under standard compliance protocols.
Extraction Kinetics
Migration testing with fatty food simulants establishes whether a polymer formulation complies with overall and specific migration limits set by food safety authorities. Surrogate liquids such as isooctane or ethanol aqueous solutions extract low molecular weight oligomers, residual plasticizers, and slip additives from the resin matrix. Selecting the appropriate simulant depends strictly on the chemical nature of the packaged goods and the intended storage temperature profile.
Resin Formulation
Formulators must balance mechanical performance against migration potential when selecting base polymers and compounding additives for grease contact applications. High density polyethylene and polypropylene offer good resistance to lipid penetration, but modifying these resins with slip agents or antistatic chemicals can increase extractables during simulant exposure. Moulders control this parameter by drying polymer pellets thoroughly prior to injection moulding to prevent hydrolytic degradation and minimize volatile fractions in the finished part.
Process Stability
Thermal degradation inside the barrel during injection moulding generates low molecular weight fragments that elevate overall migration values in subsequent simulant testing. Processing temperatures held too high cause polymer chain scission, which leaves a population of short chain molecules vulnerable to solvent extraction by lipid simulants. Optimizing barrel residence time and cooling rates ensures the moulded part maintains a stable crystalline structure that locks potential migrants within the polymer matrix.
