Meaning
Gravity-assisted conveyor channels and angled guide plates move ejected plastic components from an open mold cavity down to collection bins or takeaway belts. The drop chute operates at the ejection stage of an injection molding cycle, controlling the descent trajectory of warm parts as mechanical ejector pins push them off the core steel. Excessive fall distance or improper slide angles cause scuff marks and part deformation before the resin cools below its heat deflection temperature.
This guiding channel defines the physical path out of the press enclosure while keeping warm parts away from hot tie bars and oily hydraulic rams. Polymeric materials with high tackiness require specific chute surface treatments to ensure uninterrupted motion during continuous high-speed runs.
Discharge Mechanism
Smooth surface liners made from stainless steel or low-friction fluoropolymers prevent soft molded parts from sticking to chute walls during thermal transition. As warm resin contacts the drop chute, low surface energy coatings dissipate frictional heat and prevent static buildup from charging susceptible materials like polycarbonate or polystyrene. High friction along the sliding surface disrupts part cadence, leading to accumulation at the mold discharge throat and forcing press stoppages.
Lowering the inclination angle reduces impact velocity when handling clear optical lenses or polished aesthetic covers.
Part Protection
Fragile geometry and thin-wall housings require padded deflectors or soft flexible curtains near the chute exit to absorb kinetic energy without denting thin ribs. A drop chute outfitted with cushioned silicone baffles decelerates parts gradually, preventing edge distortion in semi-crystalline resins that are still crystallizing upon ejection. Regrind contamination decreases when delicate parts remain scuff-free, avoiding the need to scrap scratched production runs.
Scrap Separation
Flap gates integrated into the discharge channel route cold slugs and runner systems directly into granulator hoppers during purge cycles. The drop chute acts as a mechanical branch point when coupled with pneumatic divert gates. Reverting contaminated resin away from prime inventory preserves resin purity and prevents regrind dilution in tight-tolerance applications.
