Meaning
Non-contact optical profiling provides high-resolution data on surface topography and thickness without touching the specimen. Confocal metrology utilizes a spatial pinhole to block out-of-focus light, allowing for precise measurements of micro-molded features or thin film layers. It measures the height of a surface by finding the peak intensity of light through a focal plane sweep.
Surface Profiling
Vertical resolution in the nanometer range enables the inspection of texture on a mold cavity. By scanning across the surface, the system generates a detailed map of the peaks and valleys that define the aesthetic finish of a consumer electronics part. The method handles translucent or high-gloss polymers where contact probes might scratch the surface.
Measurement Capability
Depth measurements of narrow trenches and small holes become possible due to the axial sectioning property. This ability ensures that the toolmaker has achieved the required depth for micro-fluidic channels or sub-micron ribs. Because the system captures data in three dimensions, it identifies localized wear patterns that traditional 2D profilometry might miss.
The resulting point cloud offers a detailed view of the geometry.
Data Reliability
Consistent results depend on the numerical aperture of the objective lens. High-quality data prevents the shipment of out-of-spec batches. The digital reconstruction of the surface allows for a direct comparison against the original CAD file.
