Meaning
Analytical gas specifications dictate the allowable moisture content in the inert gas stream used during high temperature polymer analysis. In coulometric Karl Fischer titration of plastic pellets, carrier gas dryness determines the baseline stability of the measuring cell by preventing atmospheric moisture from leaking into the instrument. This parameter establishes the lower limit of detection for trace moisture in hygroscopic polymers like polycarbonate or polyamide before they enter the molding machine.
A dry nitrogen supply ensures that the moisture evaporated from the heated polymer sample is the only water measured.
Purge Quality
Supply lines must deliver nitrogen with a dewpoint below minus sixty degrees Celsius to avoid false positive moisture readings. When carrier gas dryness is compromised, background moisture drifts upward and creates an unstable baseline that obscures the true moisture content of the polymer. Regrind resin processing becomes highly risky when analysis errors lead to under-drying, causing hydrolysis during injection molding.
Moulders must monitor gas cylinders closely because a drop in supply pressure can introduce ambient air into the sampling loop. This issue often results in unnecessary drying extensions that waste energy and tie up hopper capacity, while the actual resin might already be dry enough for the molding run.
Measurement Accuracy
High precision sensors in the gas path confirm that moisture levels remain below five parts per million. Maintaining this carrier gas dryness ensures that the extraction of water from the resin pellets is completed without read-back delays. If the gas carries humidity, the instrument overestimates the water content, forcing the operator to run unnecessary drying cycles.
This increases energy usage and accelerates resin thermal degradation.
Baseline Variance
Prolonged exposure of the analytical system to poorly dried gas can saturate the titration cell reagent. The resulting recovery time for the instrument increases from minutes to hours, stopping production checks on the molding floor. Ensuring carrier gas dryness requires dedicated desiccant traps in the gas delivery line.
Regular replacement of these traps is essential to maintain calibration validity.
