Meaning
Analytical quantification techniques determine the concentration of terminal carboxylic acid moieties present on polyester and polyamide molecular chains through volumetric or potentiometric neutralization. Standard carboxyl end group titration procedures dissolve resin pellets in hot organic solvents such as benzyl alcohol, o-cresol, or chloroform before titrating with standardized alcoholic potassium hydroxide. The resulting value, expressed in equivalents per metric ton of polymer, quantifies the extent of polymerization and serves as a diagnostic index of prior thermal or hydrolytic degradation.
The measurement loses analytical validity if acidic additives, flame retardants, or residual acidic catalyst residues neutralize the titrant alongside genuine polymer chain ends.
Degradation Tracking
Moisture exposure during melt processing cleaves ester linkages through hydrolysis, generating free carboxylic acid and hydroxyl chain termini. Through regular carboxyl end group titration, quality personnel quantify the extent of chain scission occurring inside desiccant hoppers and moulding barrels. Virgin polyethylene terephthalate typically displays low baseline carboxyl values, whereas damp processing drives values sharply upward.
High acid end group counts accelerate further auto-catalytic breakdown during subsequent thermal exposure, drastically reducing the melt stability of the polymer during prolonged barrel residence cycles.
Melt Rheology
Molecular weight directly dictates melt viscosity, and elevated acid terminus numbers signal lower chain lengths that alter cavity filling behavior. When carboxyl end group titration reveals elevated acidic counts in incoming resin lots, molders anticipate lower melt viscosities and potential flash along parting lines. The generation of low molecular weight fragments lowers melt strength, causing parison sag in blow moulding and sink marks in thick-walled injection components.
Conversely, consistent titration values permit tight control over packing pressure and gate seal timing, ensuring part dimensions remain within engineering tolerances throughout long production runs.
Recycle Assessment
Post-consumer and post-industrial regrind streams accumulate thermal and hydrolytic damage that manifests as elevated carboxyl concentrations. Prior to compounding recycled polyester flake into moulding-grade pellets, recyclers perform carboxyl end group titration to determine the required dosage of reactive chain extenders like epoxy or carbodiimide modifiers. These functional additives react preferentially with terminal carboxylic groups, rebuilding molecular weight and neutralizing acidic species that would otherwise trigger degradation during subsequent processing.
Titration data thus governs the economic balance between raw additive additions and virgin resin blending ratios.
