Meaning
A high molecular weight sterically hindered phenolic antioxidant provides long term thermal stability to polyolefins. Performance of ao-1010 centers on scavenging peroxy radicals before they initiate polymer chain scission. The additive remains effective across a wide temperature range and exhibits low volatility during high heat extrusion.
Molecular Mass
Large molecular size reduces migration from the polymer matrix during the service life of the part. Because ao-1010 has a high mass, it stays within the plastic rather than blooming to the surface. Retention of the additive ensures that food contact applications and technical parts maintain their surface appearance.
Oxidative Resistance
Measurement of induction time reveals how well the resin resists thermal breakdown. A moulder measuring the time until exothermic oxidation begins will find that ao-1010 extends the life of a melt compared to unstabilized resins. Yellowing and loss of mechanical properties are prevented when this additive is present during the injection cycle.
Formulation Synergy
Performance improves when this primary antioxidant is paired with a phosphite or a thioester. Most masterbatch formulations combine ao-1010 with a secondary stabilizer to provide both processing protection and long term durability. Using this combination allows the moulder to incorporate higher regrind levels while the physical integrity of the finished part remains intact.
The interaction between the two chemical types creates a regenerative effect that extends the functional lifespan of the polymer.
