Meaning
Functional surface texture parameter that quantifies the volume of material contained within the core of a polymer surface. Measurement of vmc core material volume provides a numerical value for the material that supports loads after the highest peaks have worn away. It represents the bulk of the surface that provides structural integrity and wear resistance.
This metric is derived from the Abbott-Firestone curve of a three-dimensional surface profile.
Wear Prediction
Durability of a moulded texture is often predicted by analyzing how the surface material is distributed. A high vmc core material volume indicates a surface that will maintain its appearance even after substantial use. This is critical for automotive interiors where scuff resistance is a primary requirement.
If this value is too low, the texture will appear flat and polished very quickly.
Mould Replication
Accuracy in the transfer of texture from the steel tool to the plastic part is evaluated using this parameter. Differences between the vmc core material volume of the mould and the moulded part reveal issues with cooling or packing pressure. If the plastic does not fully penetrate the tool grain, the resulting core volume will be lower than intended.
This comparison identifies the limits of the moulding process.
Process Stability
Monitoring this volume across a production run detects changes in material viscosity or mould temperature. The vmc core material volume provides a stable indicator of surface quality.
