Meaning
New or modified injection molds must undergo a structured evaluation process to verify their functionality and establish a repeatable moulding window. The tool trial protocol establishes the sequence of tests used to optimize the process parameters and identify any defects in the tool design. This procedure ensures that both the mold and the injection moulding machine can run continuously and produce parts that meet all dimensional specifications.
Systematic Testing
Engineers begin by conducting a fill study to check for balanced flow across multi-cavity molds. During a tool trial protocol, a series of short shots are produced to ensure that all cavities fill simultaneously and that the gate freezes at the correct time. This is followed by a gate freeze study to determine the optimum holding time for the specific resin.
Data Collection
Molding variables are recorded at each step of the trial to create a complete process sheet. Recording parameters such as melt temperature, hydraulic pressure, and cooling times allows for the reproduction of the process during future production runs. In addition to process data, the trial yields sample parts that are sent to the quality department for full metrology and physical testing.
These measured dimensions are compared to the mold drawings to determine if any steel modifications or cavity adjustments are necessary before final validation.
Production Signoff
Final approval is granted only when the mold can run continuously without manual intervention or part defects. The tool trial protocol culminates in a multi-hour run that demonstrates process capability and tool reliability. Once this phase is successfully completed, the tool is signed off for commercial production.
