Meaning
Dimensional accuracy requirements for high-volume automotive parts are verified through a rigorous check of the tooling surfaces. Tool steel cavity inspection identifies wear, damage or manufacturing errors that would lead to defects in the moulded plastic parts. This procedure uses high-precision tools such as coordinate measuring machines, optical scanners or bore gauges.
It is a necessary step both after initial tool manufacture and at regular intervals during a production run.
Wear Detection
Erosion caused by abrasive fillers like glass or carbon fibers is a common focus of these inspections. Over time, the high-pressure flow of reinforced resin rounds off sharp corners and widens gates, leading to flash or dimensional drift. Measuring these changes allows a maintenance team to schedule repairs before the part quality falls below the acceptable limit.
Surface Integrity
Visual and tactile checks identify scratches, pitting or corrosion that would appear on the surface of the plastic part. Even small imperfections can cause ejection issues if the plastic sticks in a damaged area of the steel. Polishing or re-texturing is required if the inspection reveals that the ra value has deviated from the specification.
Shut Off Verification
Clearance between the mating surfaces of the mould is measured to prevent the escape of molten plastic. If the inspection shows a gap greater than the flash point of the resin, the tool must be adjusted or shimmed.
