Meaning
Mathematical array that relates the forces applied to a structure to the resulting displacements at specific points. In the context of finite element analysis for plastic parts, the stiffness matrix represents the structural resistance of the geometry and the material properties. This tool allows engineers to simulate how a moulding will behave under complex loading conditions.
Numerical Simulation
Every element in the digital model contributes its own local coefficients to the global stiffness matrix. As the solver processes these values, it calculates the deflection and the stress distribution across the entire part. This simulation helps identify thin sections that might buckle or thick sections that provide unnecessary weight to the component.
Material Nonlinearity
Plastic materials often show different behaviours depending on the speed and the duration of the applied load. To account for this, the stiffness matrix must be updated during the calculation to reflect the changing modulus of the polymer under stress. Accurate inputs for the elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio are required to get a reliable result from the software when predicting the failure point of a complex assembly.
Tooling Optimization
By analyzing the results of the stiffness matrix, a designer can move ribs or increase wall thicknesses where the structure is weakest. This optimization reduces the need for physical prototypes and multiple iterations of the steel mould. The final matrix provides a complete map of the mechanical performance of the component.
