Meaning
Tooling configurations ensure that molten plastic reaches every cavity in a multi-cavity injection mould at the same time and pressure. Effective runner balancing prevents the uneven filling that causes parts to vary in weight, dimension, color and structural integrity. It is required for high-precision production.
Geometric Layout
Designers create symmetrical paths for the melt to travel from the central sprue to each individual gate. This form of runner balancing uses identical lengths and diameters for every branch to keep the flow resistance constant. While more complex to design, these layouts are less sensitive to changes in processing temperature or injection speed.
This symmetry is the most reliable way to achieve uniform filling across eight or more cavities.
Pressure Gradient
Variations in the viscosity of the polymer can cause different cavities to fill at different rates if the flow paths are not optimized. By adjusting the cross-sectional area of the channels, runner balancing compensates for the natural cooling of the melt as it travels further from the nozzle. This control over the pressure drop ensures that each part undergoes the same packing phase.
Quality Uniformity
Inconsistent flow leads to defects such as flash in one cavity and short shots in another. When runner balancing is performed correctly, the physical properties of the part from the first cavity match those of the part from the final cavity. This stability reduces the need for manual inspection and lowers the rate of rejected components during a long production run.
