Meaning
Semi-crystalline engineering thermoplastics contain polyoxymethylene polymer chains modified with comonomer units to enhance thermal degradation resistance. In precision injection moulding, pom copolymer incorporates oxyethylene units randomly distributed along oxymethylene polymer backbones to inhibit unzipping reactions during hot melt processing. This chemical structure provides resistance to strong alkalis and hot water compared to homopolymer alternatives.
The material classification governs fuel system components and precision gears, ending where pure homopolymer acetal or elastomer-modified impact grades are specified.
Chemical Structure
Ethylene oxide comonomer units incorporated at two to four percent levels interrupt long sequences of oxymethylene units along the polymer chain. When thermal cleavage occurs, degradation stops at the comonomer site rather than unzipping completely into formaldehyde gas. This molecular structure allows higher continuous processing temperatures without severe polymer degradation.
Crystalline structure content reaches sixty to sixty-five percent, resulting in a lower melting point than homopolymer acetal. Lower crystallinity reduces mold shrinkage slightly, improving dimensional stability in complex precision mouldings. Resistance to hydrolysis in hot water environments makes this copolymer suitable for plumbing fittings and boiler internal components.
Thermal stabilization additives further neutralize acidic decomposition products during long barrel residence times.
Processing Behavior
Melt processing requires careful temperature control between one hundred and ninety and two hundred and ten degrees Celsius to avoid thermal degradation. Broader processing windows reduce the risk of mold deposit formation and formaldehyde gas generation during production halts. Material regrind can be reprocessed at moderate ratios without severe loss of mechanical properties.
Component Performance
High fatigue strength and low coefficient of friction enable long term performance in unlubricated mechanical gear drives. Dimensional stability under continuous load prevents creep failure in precision snap fits and structural fasteners. Resistance to alkaline cleaning agents ensures chemical integrity in automotive fuel systems and industrial washing equipment.
