Mechanical Performance

Tensile strength and impact resistance often decrease when compared to the original virgin grade. Because polyolefin recyclate contains a mixture of different molecular weights, the melt flow behavior is typically more variable during injection. Molders adjust the process settings to accommodate these fluctuations and prevent defects like short shots or flash.

Contaminant Level

Presence of non-target polymers or residual adhesives can cause structural weaknesses in the final component. When the concentration of impurities in the polyolefin recyclate becomes too high, the risk of stress cracking increases substantially during long-term use. Thorough filtration during the extrusion of the pellets removes most of the solid debris from the melt.

This cleaning process is necessary for maintaining the aesthetic quality of the finished part and preventing clogs in the hot runner system of the mold.

Sourcing Economics

Cost savings associated with reprocessed resin depend on the price gap between virgin feedstock and the recovered material. Although polyolefin recyclate offers a lower initial price, the increased scrap rate and more frequent maintenance can offset the benefits. Procurement teams evaluate the total cost of ownership before switching to a higher percentage of recycled content.
