Meaning
Reinforced thermoplastic polymers utilize glass fibers embedded in a polyamide matrix to enhance structural stiffness and reduce thermal expansion. PA12-GF30 is a polyamide 12 composite containing thirty percent glass fiber by weight, characterized by low moisture absorption and excellent chemical resistance. This material is widely selected for precision molded parts exposed to harsh automotive under-hood or chemical environments.
Material Composition
The base polyamide 12 resin has a long hydrocarbon chain that absorbs far less water than shorter-chain nylons. This structural feature provides superior dimensional stability in humid conditions, which is further improved by the glass fiber reinforcement.
Mechanical Property
The combination of thirty percent glass fibers with the tough polyamide 12 matrix results in high tensile strength and a high flexural modulus. This composite resists creep and fatigue under continuous mechanical load, making it suitable for structural brackets and gear housings. These elevated mechanical properties allow thin-walled part designs that save weight without sacrificing part performance.
Processing Requirement
Processing this composite requires high melt temperatures and wear-resistant tool steel due to the abrasive nature of the glass fibers. Injection molding machines must use bimetallic barrels and hardened screw tips to prevent rapid erosion of the plasticizing unit. In addition, the molding setup must be optimized to control fiber orientation and minimize knit-line weakness in the finished part, as fiber alignment creates distinct directionality in both strength and shrinkage.
