Meaning
Mechanical force specifications define the pressure required to hold an injection mold closed against the internal cavity pressure generated by the molten polymer. Processors calculate mold clamping tonnage to select the appropriate molding machine size and prevent flash from occurring along the parting line. This calculation depends on the projected area of the molded parts and the injection pressure.
Force Calculation
Determining the correct clamp force involves multiplying the total projected area of the parts and runners by the average cavity pressure. Insufficient mold clamping tonnage allows the mold halves to separate slightly during the high-pressure injection phase. This separation leads to plastic leaking into the vents and parting lines, creating flash on the molded pieces.
Machine Selection
Processing plants must match molds to machines that provide the necessary force. Setting the mold clamping tonnage too high can crush venting channels. Selecting a machine with the correct force optimizes energy use.
Process Optimization
Injection profiles and melt temperatures can be adjusted to reduce the required holding force on the polymer. Utilizing lower injection speeds can help lower the average cavity pressure and thus reduce the necessary mold clamping tonnage. This optimization reduces mechanical stress on machine toggle links and extends the lifespan of the tool, resulting in lower maintenance costs and fewer production interruptions.
