Meaning
Graphical representations of the relationship between the moisture content of a polymer and the relative humidity of the surrounding air at a constant temperature represent primary tools in material preparation. This curve, representing the moisture equilibrium isotherm, shows how much water the polymer will absorb or release when exposed to different atmospheric conditions. It is highly specific to each polymer type, with hygroscopic resins like nylon showing a much steeper curve than non-polar materials like polyethylene.
This relationship is critical for determining the required drying times and storage conditions for polymer pellets before processing.
Isotherm Characteristic
The shape of the curve reflects the mechanism of moisture absorption within the polymer matrix, which can vary from surface adsorption to deep bulk diffusion. At low relative humidity, the moisture content increases slowly as water molecules occupy the most accessible polar sites on the polymer chain. As the humidity rises, the absorption increases more rapidly as water molecules begin to form clusters and plasticize the polymer structure.
This curve must be determined experimentally for each resin grade to ensure accurate prediction of moisture behavior during storage and processing.
Processing Influence
Understanding the moisture absorption limits of a resin helps injection molders and extruders prevent severe quality defects in finished parts. If a polymer has a high moisture content, it must be dried until the moisture level is below the processing threshold indicated by the curve. For example, polycarbonate must be dried to a moisture content below zero point zero two percent to prevent hydrolysis during melt processing.
The isotherm data allow process engineers to design drying protocols that achieve this target moisture level efficiently.
Storage Optimization
The isotherm data are also utilized to design packaging and storage systems that protect the polymer pellets from excessive moisture absorption. High-barrier bags with aluminum foil are used to store hygroscopic resins in humid environments. The data can be used to calculate the shelf life of the resin in different packaging configurations, ensuring that the material remains dry enough for processing.
This optimization reduces the energy and time required for drying before production, lower operating costs.
