Meaning
Ceramic powder provides electrical isolation between a resistance wire and its metal sheath. The magnesium oxide dielectric is the standard choice for industrial heaters due to its high thermal conductivity and excellent dielectric strength. It fills the void inside the heater assembly to prevent electrical arcing while allowing heat to pass outward.
Performance is limited by the purity of the powder and its ability to resist moisture ingress.
Thermal Transfer
Heat moves through the ceramic grains to reach the outer casing and the tool. Using a magnesium oxide dielectric ensures that the internal wire does not overheat and melt. The crystalline structure of the mineral is optimized to bridge the gap between the coil and the sheath.
Electrical Resistance
Isolation of the live wire from the grounded casing prevents dangerous leakage currents. At room temperature, the magnesium oxide dielectric offers extremely high resistance values. This value decreases as the temperature rises, necessitating careful monitoring in high voltage applications.
Compaction Density
Vibration and swaging processes pack the powder to eliminate air gaps. High compaction density in the magnesium oxide dielectric improves both heat flow and mechanical support for the internal wire. Loose powder can lead to hotspots and eventual burnout of the heating element.
