Meaning
Electromechanical transduction equipment converts linear motion into a corresponding electrical signal. An lvdt displacement sensor utilizes a primary coil and two secondary coils arranged around a movable ferromagnetic core to output an AC voltage proportional to the distance traveled. This construction allows for frictionless operation that prevents wear during continuous cycling.
The device operates on the principle of mutual induction where position changes shift the magnetic coupling between the central core and the outer windings. Output linearity remains high across the full nominal stroke range because the differential voltage between secondary coils cancels out common mode error sources.
Process Variable
Accurate monitoring of ram position governs the consistency of hydraulic injection moulding machines during the packing and holding phases. A technician mounts an lvdt displacement sensor on the piston rod to provide real-time feedback on travel distance during melt delivery. Drift in the measured stroke value indicates a change in material viscosity or air trapped within the melt flow.
Stable control of this feedback loop prevents short shots and flashing in final parts.
Tooling Accuracy
Precision moulding requirements demand strict calibration of the sensor feedback against physical gauge blocks. Machine controllers translate the output voltage of an lvdt displacement sensor into specific millimetre increments for mould closure settings. Excessive thermal expansion in the mould housing introduces errors that the sensor cannot detect unless operators perform regular zeroing sequences.
Virgin resin processing relies on this repeatable stroke measurement to maintain exact shot volumes.
Economic Consequence
Excessive sensor drift leads to higher scrap rates and increased consumption of high cost engineering resins. Regrind percentages fluctuate if the stroke control fails to compensate for the lower density of recycled material. Regular maintenance of these devices saves production time that otherwise disappears into manual tool adjustments.
Every deviation from the programmed stroke limit subtracts value from the production run.
