Meaning
Global phytosanitary standard regulating the treatment of wood packaging material to prevent the international spread of forest pests. Compliance with ispm-15 timber packaging involves heat treatment or fumigation of the wooden crates and pallets used to transport injection moulds across international borders. The standard applies to all coniferous and non-coniferous wood packaging thicker than six millimetres.
Heat Treatment
Exposure to a specific temperature for a minimum duration kills insects and larvae residing within the wood grain. For ispm-15 timber packaging, the core of the timber must reach fifty-six degrees Celsius for at least thirty consecutive minutes. This process is documented by a certified treatment provider who then applies the official mark to the wood.
Certification Marking
Permanent stamps on the exterior of the crate indicate the country of origin, the provider code and the treatment method used. Customs inspectors look for this specific mark on ispm-15 timber packaging to confirm that the shipment does not pose a biological risk to local forests. Shipments lacking the mark are often quarantined or returned to the shipper at the owner’s expense.
Border Rejection
Non-compliant wood can lead to the destruction of the entire shipping crate at the port of entry.
