Meaning
Material density measurement utilizes the displacement of a liquid to determine the specific gravity of molded plastic specimens. This measurement technique relies on the Archimedes principle, where a specimen is weighed in both air and a reference liquid of known density. For quality control in polymer extrusion and molding, hydro-balance density provides a rapid and accurate method to verify that the resin has been properly processed.
The method can detect changes in crystallinity, the presence of voids or the incorrect loading of mineral fillers. This test is a fundamental tool for ensuring that molded parts meet their mechanical and dimensional specifications.
Measurement Accuracy
The choice of reference liquid and the temperature control of the testing environment are critical for accurate results. When measuring hydro-balance density, the reference liquid must not swell or react with the polymer being tested. Distilled water is commonly used for most polymers, while a low-surface-tension fluid like ethanol is preferred for hydrophobic polyolefins to prevent air bubbles from adhering to the specimen surface.
A single trapped bubble can cause a significant underestimate of the specimen’s actual density.
Process Control
Variations in the density of molded parts often indicate changes in the processing conditions or the material formulation. A drop in hydro-balance density can signal that the part contains microvoids or that the packing pressure in the mold was insufficient. Conversely, an increase in density may point to a higher level of crystallinity, which can make the part stiffer but more brittle.
Molders use this feedback to maintain a stable process and prevent part failures.
Equipment Configuration
The test setup consists of a high-precision analytical balance equipped with a specialized immersion basket and a beaker support. This configuration allows the operator to weigh the specimen first on the upper pan in air and then on the suspended basket submerged in the liquid. Modern balances automatically calculate the value using integrated software.
