Meaning
Medium and linear low-density polyethylenes polymerized with 1-hexene as a comonomer form tough thermoplastic resins characterized by butyl short-chain side branches. A hexene copolymer provides superior mechanical properties, tensile strength and puncture resistance compared to traditional butene-based polymers. The butyl branches created by hexene incorporation increase tie-molecule density across amorphous regions, boosting impact performance in demanding film and moulding applications.
Structural performance benefits from longer side chains that anchor crystallites together. The material classification covers linear low-density film grades and high-density blow moulding resins, excluding homopolymer polyethylenes.
Branching Toughness
Incorporating 1-hexene into the ethylene backbone generates four-carbon side branches that alter crystalline morphology without preventing crystallization. In a hexene copolymer, these butyl branches entangle efficiently in amorphous domains, resisting chain disentanglement under rapid mechanical impact. Film converters achieve higher dart drop strength at reduced film gauges, enabling down-gauging without sacrificing package durability.
Part manufacturers experience improved drop impact resistance in blow-moulded industrial containers.
Extrusion Economics
Monomer raw material costs for 1-hexene exceed those of 1-butene, raising resin synthesis costs for polymer producers. Sourcing a hexene copolymer involves higher purchase price premiums that converters offset through material downgauging and reduced part weight. Melt viscosity increases slightly relative to butene grades, requiring higher extruder torque and elevated melt temperatures.
Extruders must balance higher resin costs against processing energy consumption.
Stress Resistance
Resistance to slow crack growth makes hexene-based resins ideal for long-term outdoor and industrial packaging applications. A hexene copolymer demonstrates superior environmental stress crack resistance when exposed to surfactants or mechanical fatigue over extended time periods. Pipes produced from hexene grades maintain long-term hydrostatic strength under internal pressure.
Standard datasheet tensile values reflect short-term strength rather than long-term environmental durability.
