Meaning
Micrometric alignment tolerances determine the radial symmetry between a runner nozzle tip orifice and the surrounding mold cavity steel. Maintaining gate land concentricity ensures balanced shear heating and symmetrical melt entry into the part cavity during injection. The physical condition applies strictly to the interface geometry where the runner system intersects the parting line or cavity insert.
Outside this narrow physical boundary, thermal expansion of the manifold plate governs runner alignment rather than land geometry.
Flow Dynamics
Asymmetrical flow channels generate non-uniform shear stress across the melt front as molten polymer passes through the orifice. Deviations in gate land concentricity create localized velocity vectors, forcing fluid toward one side of the impression. The resulting filling imbalance creates differential cooling rates, triggering internal stress concentrations and localized warpage in thin-walled technical mouldings.
Balanced shear distribution prevents core pin deflection during high-pressure packing phases.
Defect Formation
Mechanical misalignment at the gate orifice produces immediate visual and dimensional flaws on finished plastic components. Loss of gate land concentricity causes preferential shear thinning along the narrower clearance wall, leading to severe gate vestige, jetting or localized polymer degradation. Unbalanced shear forces also induce uneven wall section packing, creating sink marks opposite the tight clearance zone.
Repeated eccentric contact between valve pin and gate steel accelerates localized tool wear, causing flash generation and premature insert failure.
Tooling Inspection
Optical coordinate measuring instruments verify orifice positioning during mold assembly and maintenance schedules. Checking gate land concentricity requires measuring radial runout between the valve pin centerline and the gate land bore inside the cavity block.
