Meaning
Precision positioning systems in micro-moulding tools employ thin, flexible joints that allow controlled, frictionless motion while preventing the transfer of unwanted forces. Using flexure hinge isolation protects sensitive cavity inserts or displacement sensors from mechanical vibrations.
Motion Control
High-frequency vibrations from the injection ram or clamp movement can disrupt the alignment of micro-mould inserts. Implementing flexure hinge isolation ensures that these disturbances are absorbed before they reach the cavity, preventing micro-scale defects in the moulded part. The frictionless nature of these polymer joints eliminates stick-slip effects and hysteresis, enabling extremely precise positioning.
This stability is particularly important when producing complex micro-optical lenses.
Load Management
Thermal expansion during tool heating can generate substantial internal stresses that distort the cavity shape. Designing the tool with flexure hinge isolation allows the heated inserts to expand freely without inducing stress in the main mould base. This approach maintains the alignment of the parting line and prevents flash formation or part distortion.
It also extends the service life of the tool by reducing fatigue on critical components.
Precision Decoupling
Polymers chosen for these flexible joints must withstand high cyclic loading without experiencing fatigue failure or permanent deformation. The flexure hinge isolation depends on the material’s elastic limit and fatigue strength to function reliably over millions of cycles. Acetal or specialized polypropylene grades are commonly selected for their high fatigue resistance and low creep behavior.
Proper hinge geometry ensures that the stresses remain well below the yield strength of the selected polymer.
