Meaning
Phenolic antioxidants shield polyolefin chains from thermal oxidative degradation during melt compounding and injection moulding. The chemical additive designated as e321 scavenges free radicals generated when heat and shear break carbon bonds inside polypropylene or polyethylene matrices. Protection stops when high processing temperatures cause the volatile antioxidant to evaporate or migrate out of the polymer matrix before cooling finishes.
Thermal Protection
Polymer degradation proceeds through radical propagation that breaks polymer backbone chains during heating cycles inside the barrel. Addition of e321 halts this damaging reaction by donating active hydrogen atoms to peroxy radicals before destructive hydroperoxides form and split. Moulding operations running at elevated temperatures reduce local additive concentration through rapid volatilization.
Lower concentrations leave molded parts vulnerable to immediate discolouration and embrittlement during subsequent storage cycles. Processors measure stabilizer depletion by tracking induction time under pure oxygen streams.
Extraction Boundary
Migratory additives face limits when polyolefin parts touch food media. Testing confirms extractable e321 remains below specified migration thresholds. Exceeding boundaries requires switching to heavier non-migrating stabilizers.
Processing Degradation
Shear heating inside the extruder barrel accelerates stabilizer consumption during conversion. When regrind loading rises, residual e321 drops rapidly, causing melt flow index spikes and yellowing in secondary mouldings. Moulders monitor residual additive levels using gas chromatography to determine whether virgin resin blending must increase.
