Meaning
Mechanical isolation of the flow path in a non heated distribution system prevents resin from entering specific cavities during an injection cycle. Implementing a cold runner shutoff allows a moulder to continue production when one cavity in a multi cavity tool develops a defect or requires maintenance. This component stops the delivery of molten polymer at the sub runner level without requiring the entire tool to be pulled from the press.
Shutoff Mechanism
Manual or hydraulic pins interrupt the melt stream before it reaches the gate. The cold runner shutoff functions by physically blocking the channel, which causes the pressure in that specific branch to rise until it matches the primary runner pressure. Such a device is common in high volume packaging where downtime costs for a full tool repair exceed the loss of output from a single blocked cavity.
Operational Impact
Diverting flow through the use of these pins changes the balance of the remaining cavities. Because the cold runner shutoff reduces the total volume of the shot, the injection profile requires adjustment to prevent overpacking or flash in the active sections. Success depends on the ability of the controller to compensate for the reduced shot weight.
Maintenance Boundary
Plastic remains stagnant behind the blockage during the heat soak of the run. Over time, the material at the cold runner shutoff interface may undergo thermal degradation if the tool remains in service for extended periods. This degradation leads to contamination once the shutoff is eventually opened.
