Meaning
Temperature sensing device constructed with one conductor surrounding another in a concentric arrangement. Fast response times make the coaxial thermocouple suitable for measuring rapid thermal changes at the interface of a polymer melt and a mould wall. Its design minimizes the distance between the junction and the surface of interest.
Response Rate
Thermal inertia is lower in this configuration than in standard probe styles. Rapid signal transmission allows for the capture of microsecond temperature spikes during the injection phase. These sensors are often integrated directly into the cavity surface to monitor heat transfer during solidification.
Surface Integrity
Installation requires precise machining to ensure the tip remains flush with the tool steel. A protruding sensor creates a physical defect on the part, while a recessed one introduces an air pocket that slows the response.
Data Reliability
Accuracy is maintained by using materials that match the thermal properties of the surrounding mould steel. This prevents the sensor from acting as a heat sink or a hot spot. Consistent readings enable the validation of complex cooling simulations and the refinement of cycle times to maximize plant throughput while ensuring that the physical properties of the polymer are not compromised by localized cooling variations.
