Meaning
Active flow control technology in injection moulding regulates the movement of a valve pin based on real-time feedback from the mould cavity or runner system. Using a closed-loop valve gate allows moulders to adjust the pin position dynamically during the injection cycle. Pneumatic or electric actuators drive the valve pin to modulate polymer flow directly.
Unbalanced filling in multi-cavity moulds is prevented by this continuous modulation.
Actuation Control
Transducers measure cavity pressure or pin position and transmit these data to a central controller. The controller compares the signal against a pre-programmed profile and adjusts the pneumatic or hydraulic pressure. Through this continuous loop, the closed-loop valve gate achieves sub-millimetre accuracy in pin positioning.
Process Stability
Consistent flow rates are maintained even when polymer viscosity fluctuates between batches. Traditional systems rely on timers that cannot adapt to material changes. By measuring real-time flow resistance, the closed-loop valve gate responds to batch variations and ensures uniform part weight.
Defect Prevention
Surface blemishes and flashing are minimized by tapering the flow rate as the cavity reaches volumetric fill. When the pin closes slowly, pressure spikes that cause stress concentrations are avoided. Scrap rates in high-precision optical components are reduced because the gate marks are uniform and stress-free.
The system also prevents the formation of weld lines by sequence-opening gates in a multi-gate part, allowing the flow fronts to merge cleanly without cooling prematurely.
