Meaning
International standards governing fluid cleanliness classify the concentration of solid contaminants in hydraulic systems. The ISO 4406 rating uses three numbers to represent the quantity of particles larger than four, six, and fourteen microns per millilitre of oil. This protocol provides a baseline for fluid monitoring in plastic extrusion and injection moulding machinery.
Hydraulic Cleanliness
High-pressure pumps and proportional valves require clean oil to operate without fluid bypass or internal abrasion. Applying ISO 4406 allows maintenance technicians to detect early hydraulic seal wear and hose degradation before catastrophic pump failure occurs. Clean oil decreases fluid friction and prevents the sticking of sensitive spool valves.
Particle Measurement
Automatic particle counters draw samples from the main reservoir or from the active pressure line during production. The ISO 4406 measurement scale is logarithmic, meaning each increase in the code number represents a doubling of the particulate population. This sensitivity helps engineers track the efficiency of off-line filtration loops and select appropriate replacement filter elements.
Solenoid Protection
Modern injection moulding presses rely on quick-response proportional solenoids to control screw speed and injection pressure with high repeatability. If the oil cleanliness falls below the recommended ISO 4406 threshold, fine metal filings and silica particles lodge in the spool clearances, causing erratic filling and shot-weight variations. Adhering to strict filtration targets prevents drift in the process variable, protecting delicate electronics and reducing scrap during long production runs.
