Meaning
Hydraulic pressure applied to a mould plate determines the force holding the tool halves shut against internal injection pressures. Clamp preload refers to this set resistance which prevents flash at the parting line during material injection. This setting requires adjustment based on the projected area of the cavity and the viscosity of the polymer.
Proper calculation accounts for the maximum melt pressure that the injection unit exerts on the projected surface to ensure the mould stays closed.
Production Resistance
Tooling longevity depends on the accurate application of this force to protect sealing surfaces from damage. Excessive settings deform the platen or cause permanent sink marks in thin sections of the moulded part. Insufficient pressure allows the polymer to force the mould slightly open, which creates flash along the edge of the finished object.
Consistent control of this variable remains the primary method for maintaining dimensional stability across long production cycles.
Setting Verification
Injection moulders determine this value through a calculation of the total projected area of the part and runners multiplied by the maximum melt pressure. Machine interfaces allow operators to input a target force that corresponds to the specific requirements of the mould steel. Variations in resin grade or additive loading change the necessary melt pressure, which then necessitates a change in the machine parameters.
A moulder verifies that the chosen force remains within the structural capacity of the press before beginning a production run to prevent mechanical failure.
Engineering Specification
Datasheets for a specific mould provide the minimum force requirements necessary for operation. Procurement teams distinguish between the machine capacity of a press and the actual pressure required by the individual tool design. Higher clamp settings drive energy consumption upward without providing additional quality benefits once the threshold for preventing flash is met.
Surplus force creates unwanted stress on the machine tie bars and the mould guiding components.
