Meaning
Electrical transducer signal baseline shift measures the gradual offset in dielectric permittivity readings recorded by in-mould sensors during continuous polymer processing. Dielectric monitoring systems rely on steady baseline values to track resin melt viscosity and crystallization timing inside the cavity. When capacitance drift occurs, signal distortion shifts the reported solidification point, corrupting automated press controls during long molding runs.
High production rates exacerbate baseline offset as heat transfers through the transducer housing. Datasheet specs for raw sensors rarely capture this shift because ambient bench testing ignores the severe thermal gradients present inside an active injection mould.
Dielectric Shift
Thermal gradients across the sensor face alter the permittivity of internal ceramic insulators. Temperature changes during continuous moulding cycles alter sensor capacitance even when polymer density stays constant. Polymer resins containing abrasive fillers exacerbate baseline movement by scrubbing away protective sensor coatings.
Packing Variance
Signal baseline displacement tricks the machine controller into triggering hold pressure prematurely or late. Early hold termination causes sink marks on thick wall sections. Delayed pressure release causes flash along parting lines and increases tool wear.
Sensor Recalibration
Press operators restore signal accuracy by zeroing transducer baselines between batches. Automated calibration routines clear accumulated thermal offsets without stopping production.
