Meaning
Polymer chain segment freedom within the non-crystalline regions of a semi-crystalline thermoplastic dictates how easily molecules can reorganise above the glass transition temperature. This molecular freedom, known as amorphous phase mobility, determines the rate of post-condensation reactions in solid-state polymerization because chain movement brings reactive end groups together. Without sufficient movement, the reaction slows down or halts entirely, regardless of the remaining reactive sites.
This property is governed by the temperature of the resin and the presence of plasticizers.
Physical Mechanism
Thermal energy determines the frequency of molecular rotations that allow these non-crystalline chains to wiggle. Under solid-state polymerization conditions, amorphous phase mobility allows functional polymer ends to migrate closer to one another. This movement is necessary because crystalline zones remain locked.
Process Effect
Processing temperatures in the dryer or solid-state reactor are carefully controlled to balance reaction rates against the risk of pellet agglomeration. For example, polyethylene terephthalate pellets require crystallization before they are subjected to high-temperature reaction zones, as low amorphous phase mobility prevents the sticky amorphous surfaces from fusing under heat. High molecular motion increases the reaction kinetics by allowing the glycol byproducts to escape from the polymer matrix.
Defect Prevention
Moisture level and copolymer content alter the thermal threshold where chains start to flow. When copolymer modifications are added to the resin, they lower the glass transition point, which increases amorphous phase mobility at lower thermal exposures. If the temperature exceeds the safe boundary, pellet bridging occurs in the feed hopper, stopping the extruder and causing inconsistent melt pressure.
Preventing this defect requires careful pre-drying and maintaining pellet temperatures well below the sticking point. Operators must track the intrinsic viscosity of incoming lots to adjust the zone temperatures accordingly.
