Meaning
Technical documentation packages assemble the digital design files and engineering data required to manufacture and maintain an injection mold. The tool dossier CAD files contain three dimensional models, assembly drawings, and individual component specifications for the entire mold. This digital record is essential for troubleshooting molding problems, ordering replacement components, and transferring the tool between manufacturing sites.
Assembly Detail
The CAD files include detailed three dimensional models of the mold base, cavity inserts, cores, ejector pins, slide mechanisms, and cooling lines. These files show the precise dimensions, machining tolerances, and material specifications for every individual component of the mold assembly. This digital database allows the manufacturing or repair team to understand how the components fit together and how the mold operates during the high pressure injection cycle.
Maintenance Tooling
If a mold component suffers damage or wears out, the CAD files are used to machine a replacement insert with high precision. Tool rooms can load the CAD model directly into computer numerical control machining centers or electrical discharge machines to fabricate the part. This process avoids the need to manually measure the damaged insert or ship the entire mold back to the original toolmaker.
Asset Transfer
Having a complete set of files allows the owner of the tool to transfer production to a different molding facility if needed. It ensures that the technical knowledge required to operate the mold is not locked with a single supplier. This documentation protects the capital investment in the mold.
