Meaning
Functional polymer ingredients that spontaneously migrate to the material interface during cooling modify the boundary properties of molded plastics and films. These surface active additives lower interfacial tension to provide properties such as anti-fogging, slip, or static dissipation. Because they contain both hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions, they orient themselves with their polar heads facing outward.
Their surface concentration continues to build after the part is ejected from the mold.
Surface Tension
Coefficients of friction are altered by the accumulation of slip agents at the polymer-air boundary. Applying surface active additives prevents plastic films from sticking to themselves during high-speed winding operations. This bloom effect is temperature-dependent and takes several days to reach equilibrium.
Proper dosage avoids excessive buildup that could hinder printing or lamination.
Polymer Processing
Melt fracture and surface defects are reduced by lubricating the interface between the polymer melt and the metal die. Incorporating surface active additives into the extrusion feed improves resin throughput and reduces processing pressure. This lubrication step is especially useful when extruding narrow-tolerance polyolefin films.
Mold Release
Part release from complex mold geometries is facilitated by these migrating compounds. Using surface active additives reduces injection pressure requirements and prevents part distortion during ejection. This leads to shorter cycle times and less production scrap.
