Meaning
Process control strategy that maintains a constant ratio of polymer mass to volume inside the mould cavity during the cooling phase. Implementing specific volume control is necessary to preventing sink marks and maintaining tight dimensional tolerances. This strategy uses thermodynamic equations based on pressure, volume, and temperature curves to guide the machine.
By adjusting the holding pressure as the polymer cools, the system keeps the density uniform across all cycles.
Density Management
Polymers shrink as they transition from a hot liquid to a cool solid, which changes their specific volume. To counteract this, the machine must continuously inject more material into the cavity during the holding phase. Specific volume control calculates the exact amount of extra material required based on the current temperature and pressure of the melt.
This ensures that the final part has the correct density and weight when it is ejected from the mould. This level of control is necessary for high-precision components like plastic gears.
Cooling Optimization
Uniform cooling is essential for the success of this control strategy, as uneven temperatures create density variations. Cooling channels in the mould must be designed to extract heat evenly from all areas of the part. If one region cools faster, it will solidify earlier, disrupting the calculated volume control and leading to warpage.
Dimensional Consistency
Automotive and electronics manufacturers require parts to meet extremely tight dimensional tolerances that cannot drift over a production run. With standard processing, variations in ambient temperature or resin batches cause the specific volume to fluctuate, resulting in size differences from part to part. Specific volume control eliminates these fluctuations by adjusting the pressure profile in real time to match the defined thermodynamic curve.
This results in incredibly consistent dimensions, with variations reduced to microns rather than millimeters. Moulders who implement this technology can run fully automated assembly lines with confidence, knowing that every part will fit perfectly into the final product.
