Meaning
Optical instruments utilize a narrow core to transmit a single light path for high precision monitoring of environment variables inside a mould. A single mode fiber sensor can measure temperature, pressure, or strain with high accuracy and minimal signal loss over long distances. Because it lacks the modal dispersion found in wider fibers, the data it provides is extremely clean.
It is often embedded directly into the tool or the part itself.
Signal Transmission
Light travels through a core that is only a few microns wide. This allows the single mode fiber sensor to maintain signal integrity even in the presence of electromagnetic interference from heavy machinery. It is an ideal solution for monitoring the moulding process in a factory environment.
Sensing Mechanism
Changes in the environment alter the properties of the light travelling through the fiber. A single mode fiber sensor often uses a bragg grating to reflect specific wavelengths that change when the fiber is stretched or heated. This shift is measured with high precision to give a real time reading of the process conditions.
It provides a level of detail that traditional thermocouples cannot match.
Data Fidelity
High resolution feedback enables the fine tuning of the injection parameters to match the resin requirements. Using a single mode fiber sensor reduces the uncertainty in the measurement of the internal part temperature. This leads to better control over the crystallinity and shrinkage of the polymer.
The result is a more stable production process with fewer scrap parts.
