Meaning
Post-consumer thermoplastic material undergoes mechanical grinding and cleaning to produce distinct particles sized for consistent feeding into extrusion machinery. These reprocessed flake fragments serve as feedstock for secondary manufacturing cycles after the removal of contaminants such as adhesives, inks, or non-target polymer types. The material quality depends upon the efficiency of the wash stream and the accuracy of the sorting equipment.
Processing Variable
Melt flow rate stability governs the utility of the output during subsequent conversion steps. Regrind economics require that reprocessed flake maintains a viscosity profile within a tight window to avoid pressure spikes inside the barrel of an injection moulding machine or an extruder. When the internal molecular weight distribution shifts due to thermal history, inconsistent wall thickness or brittle parts result in the finished product.
Virgin resin specifications differ from these recycled alternatives because the source stream density varies constantly between production batches.
Thermal Resistance
Extrusion temperatures define the upper limit for the application of recycled components to avoid material degradation. Higher processing heat levels during the initial wash or subsequent moulding can induce chemical scission in long polymer chains. This reduction in chain length creates a drop in mechanical properties including impact strength and elongation at break.
Engineers monitor the heat history of reprocessed flake to predict potential loss of structural integrity in high stress components.
Quality Threshold
Contaminant tolerance levels represent the primary boundary between saleable raw material and industrial waste. Particles smaller than a specific micron count must be purged from the stream to ensure that flow paths within complex moulds remain clear of blockage. Any drift in the concentration of foreign particulates leads to surface defects on the moulded item that compromise cosmetic standards.
High levels of contamination increase the maintenance frequency for filtering systems installed at the nozzle. Reliable material performance necessitates a strict adherence to these filtration parameters throughout the recovery cycle.
