Meaning
Sequence of mechanical and thermal steps converts used plastic bottles into raw material for new manufacturing cycles. Efficient recycled pet processing relies on the thorough separation of non-polyester materials.
Decontamination Step
Washing and chemical treatment remove organic residues and surface coatings from the plastic flakes. During recycled pet processing, hot caustic baths dissolve glues and labels while high speed friction washers remove dirt. Any remaining impurities can cause odors or defects in the final moulded part.
Rigorous cleaning protocols are necessary to meet food safety standards for food contact packaging.
Molecular Recovery
Degradation during the initial use and subsequent melting lowers the molecular weight of the recycled plastic. Solid state polymerization is often used within recycled pet processing to rebuild the polymer chains to their original length. This upgrading step ensures that the recycled resin has the mechanical toughness needed for stretch blow moulding.
Without this restoration, the material would be too brittle for pressurized containers.
Melt Purification
Fine mesh screens or laser filters remove solid particles from the molten polymer before it is pelletized. In the later stages of recycled pet processing, these filtration systems capture tiny fragments of metal, glass or unmelted plastics. High filtration pressure indicates a high level of contamination in the feed stream.
Clean melt ensures that the final preforms are free of structural weaknesses and visual blemishes.
