Meaning
Specialized chemical compounds incorporated into raw polymer matrices modify physical performance or processing behavior. Compounded at levels ranging from fractions of a percent to heavy loadings, polymer additives include antioxidants, thermal stabilizers, internal lubricants and nucleating agents. Base resins like polypropylene, polyethylene or polyamide lack sufficient stability to withstand melt extrusion temperatures or ambient ultraviolet radiation without these chemical packages.
The compounder incorporates additives during twin-screw extrusion pelletisation, while injection moulders sometimes introduce concentrated masterbatches directly at the machine hopper. Their function governs resin stability up to the physical limits of the polymer backbone, beyond which chemical degradation cannot be prevented.
Processing Function
Internal and external lubricants lower melt viscosity and reduce friction against steel tooling surfaces. Slip agents such as erucamide migrate rapidly toward the part exterior upon cooling, lowering the coefficient of friction to facilitate high-speed packaging ejection and part handling. Nucleating agents accelerate crystallization rates in semicrystalline polymers, shortening cooling cycle durations and boosting output across injection moulding runs.
If additive concentration drifts above specification, blooming occurs, producing greasy surface hazes and printing failures. Conversely, deficient lubrication leads to pin push-through and cavity sticking during ejection.
Degradation Defense
Primary and secondary antioxidants interrupt radical reactions caused by thermal shear in the extruder barrel. Hindered phenols scavenge peroxy radicals during processing, while phosphites decompose hydroperoxides into inert alcohols during subsequent thermal histories.
Cost Balance
Chemical modifications carry high raw material expense relative to commodity base resin. Polymer additives dictate the economic feasibility of using regrind, as adding restabilizer packages offsets thermal decay at costs lower than purchasing entirely virgin pellets.
