Meaning
Presence sensing in automated systems is achieved through the interruption or reflection of a light beam between a transmitter and a receiver. Sequence timing in injection moulding lines depends on the optical photo eye to signal the next cycle. This device detects the arrival of a part or the drop of a finished component from the mould to prevent the press from closing on a stuck part.
Such protection avoids significant damage to the tool and the ejection system.
Operational Mode
Different configurations like through beam, retroreflective and diffuse sensing allow the sensor to be tailored to the specific material properties. An optical photo eye using a through beam setup is most effective for opaque parts where the beam is completely blocked. For clear or highly reflective plastics, a polarised retroreflective sensor is often required to avoid false triggers from surface glints.
Adjusting the sensitivity allows the device to detect even small features or thin film edges. In some cases, a laser based photo eye is used for long distance sensing or for detecting very small targets where a standard LED beam would be too wide.
Reliability Factor
Industrial environments present challenges like dust, oil mist, high heat and ambient light that can interfere with the sensor signal. The optical photo eye must be shielded from overhead lighting or equipped with a pulsed infrared beam to distinguish its own light from the surroundings. Regular cleaning of the lens is required to maintain a strong signal and prevent intermittent failures.
If the sensor is misaligned, the machine may stop unexpectedly, increasing downtime and reducing overall equipment effectiveness.
Process Safety
Critical safety interlocks often rely on these sensors to protect operators and machinery. When an optical photo eye is used as a light curtain, it can instantly stop a robot or a press if a person enters the work cell. This protective function is essential in high speed moulding operations where the forces involved are high.
Ensuring the sensor has a failsafe design means that any internal fault will result in a safe machine state.
