Meaning
Physical migrations of low-molecular-weight polymer chains from the bulk of a material to its surface result in the release of semi-volatile compounds into the environment. This oligomer outgassing is particularly prevalent in polyamides and polyesters when they are exposed to high processing temperatures. The released molecules can condense on cooler surfaces, leading to aesthetic defects or functional failures in precision parts.
Thermal Migration
Heat provides the energy for small chain fragments to move through the polymer matrix toward the exterior. This process is accelerated during injection moulding when the resin is in a molten state under high pressure. If oligomer outgassing is not controlled, it can lead to the buildup of a white or waxy residue on the mould surface.
Surface Contamination
Deposited material on the tool can cause ghosting marks on the finished part or interfere with the venting of the cavity. These residues often require frequent cleaning of the mould, which reduces the overall efficiency of the production line. In electronic applications, these films can act as insulators and cause electrical failures.
Ventilation Necessity
Managing the airflow around the moulding machine helps to remove these vapors before they can condense on the parts or the equipment. Efficient venting within the tool also plays a role in reducing the local concentration of outgassed species. Proper temperature control remains the most effective way to limit the generation of these small molecules.
