Meaning
The rear or back portion of an injection moulding machine sits opposite the operator panel and the main control screen where the technician initiates cycles. This non-operator side contains mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems that require regular maintenance but are shielded from the primary workspace. It is equipped with safety gates and interlocking switches to prevent the machine from running when workers access the area to adjust cooling lines or clear parts.
Machine Safety
Safety protocols dictate that all protective gates must be closed and locked during automatic operation. The non-operator side has a sliding gate that is interlocked with the machine’s control circuit. If this gate is opened while the press is running, the hydraulic pumps shut down immediately.
This safety feature prevents injuries from moving platen parts, hot polymer leaks, and high-pressure oil sprays.
Operational Access
Access to the rear of the machine is necessary during mould setup and teardown. Technicians use this side to connect water hoses, oil lines, and electrical cables to the back of the tool.
Tooling Access
Tooling maintenance relies on clear access from both sides of the press. For example, during a production run, a technician may need to clean the mould faces or apply mould release agent from the non-operator side. Keeping this area clear of clutter, such as scrap bins and oil puddles, ensures a safe and efficient working environment.
