Meaning
Production tooling that incorporates multiple identical cavities increases the volume of parts per shot. Multi cavity mold design governs the output rate of a production line and the complexity of the resin delivery system. It is used primarily for high-volume manufacturing where minimizing the unit cost is the priority.
Runner System
The runner system in a multi cavity mold must be balanced to ensure that every impression fills at the same time and pressure. Uneven filling leads to dimensional variations and weight differences between parts from the same shot. Hot runner systems are often preferred to reduce waste and maintain melt temperature.
Machine Requirement
Operating a multi cavity mold requires a machine with sufficient clamp force and shot size to accommodate the total volume. A tool with sixteen cavities needs substantially more pressure than a single-cavity version of the same part.
Maintenance Burden
Wear and tear on a multi cavity mold is more complex to manage because a failure in one cavity can stop the entire production run. Technicians must inspect every gate and vent regularly to prevent flash or short shots. Blocked gates in a single cavity of a large tool can cause pressure spikes in the remaining impressions.
