Meaning
Crystalline aluminosilicate with a pore size of three angstroms is utilized to selectively adsorb water molecules while excluding larger organic compounds. During polymer synthesis and urethane compounding, molecular sieve 3a acts as a moisture scavenger to prevent gas bubble formation and polymer degradation.
Moisture Scavenging
Polyurethane reactions are highly sensitive to water, which reacts with isocyanates to produce carbon dioxide gas. Incorporating molecular sieve 3a into the polyol blend prevents this reaction, eliminating micro-voids and foaming defects in molded polyurethane parts. This step ensures that the molded components meet density and structural specifications.
By absorbing trace moisture before it can react, the additive ensures a smooth surface finish and prevents the internal structural weaknesses that lead to part cracking under load.
Resin Preservation
Moisture-sensitive polymers like nylon and polyester undergo hydrolysis at high temperatures, resulting in reduced molecular weight. Adding molecular sieve 3a to the storage or drying system protects the resin from ambient moisture. This drying step maintains the mechanical integrity of the polymer, ensuring that the processed parts retain their impact strength.
Processing Efficiency
Consistent moisture control during compounding eliminates the need for excessive drying times on the production floor. Using molecular sieve 3a in the compounding stage reduces energy consumption and shortens the manufacturing cycle. This additive helps maintain a stable melt viscosity during subsequent injection moulding runs, resulting in more uniform part dimensions.
